In 1980, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil prepared the initial musical script for Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the same title, Les Mis was adapted into a live stage adaptation performed as a fully lyricized play, which was an enormous achievement in that era.
After a limited season performed in French in Paris, France, there was obviously a growing demand to produce a more accessible show, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the musical score, he instantly fell in love and agreed to create an English adaptation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the new songs. The English version of Les Misérables at first performed with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it unsurprisingly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and premier theater, and remained there for almost 20 years. Les Mis then relocated one more time to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until present day. Adding together all its productions since its inception in 1980, the stage adaptation of Les Mis is actually the longest-running stage play in the entire world.
With almost 4 decades in West End solely and not even enumerating its tours in foreign countries, including its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is incontrovertible that this global hit continues to be stunning in the viewpoint of the play's attendees. The plot and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality due to the apparent emotion behind each song and act presented. The musical has become so successful that the show has been adapted to motion pictures several times and gained loyal fanbases even on another platform.
