Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the very first musical script for Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was adapted into a musical performed as a fully sung-through show, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that decade.
After an initial showing in Paris, there was evidently a growing demand to make an English version, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he fully committed and agreed to write an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the translated lyrics. The English production of the musical at first performed with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but because of its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, the show quickly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more top theater, and was performed for almost 20 years. Les Mis then relocated one more time to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. Adding together all its runs since its inception four decades ago, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running musical in the entire world.
With 37 years in West End on its own and not even counting its productions in other cities, including and definitely not limited to its well-received Broadway seasons, it is with certainty that this global hit continues to be unforgettable in the perspective of the play's attendees. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality due to the apparent heart behind each song and act staged. Les Mis has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been adapted to motion pictures repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on another medium.
