Four decades ago, a star show was born when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel wrote the original play screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (previously in the French language). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the same title, Les Misérables was transformed into a theater play as a fully lyricized play, which was monumental in that decade.
After a limited season performed in French in Paris, France, there was already a growing demand to make a more accessible version, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he fully committed and decided to create an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new songs. The English production of the musical only performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its impressive success and larger audience with the English version, the musical unsurprisingly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more top venue, and remained there for close to two decades. Les Mis then transferred one more time to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its productions since its first showing four decades ago, Les Mis is statistically the longest-running musical so far in this generation.
With 37 years in West End solely and not even enumerating its productions in foreign countries, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is undeniable that this global hit perseveres and is outstanding in the eyes of the show's fanbase. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the apparent passion behind each song and act presented. Les Mis has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been adapted to films repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on another platform.
This approaching December’s season of Les Misérables brings it to Illinois, where the show will be performed on Thursday 19th December 2024, in Cadillac Palace, Chicago.
