A musical remake of the children’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” The Wiz breathes new life into a timeless classic, redefining it in the image of African-American culture. The original Broadway production debuted to thunderous applause and critical acclaim, setting it up to vertigo-inducing heights of modern theater. Together, the cast and creatives of the show accomplished a near-sweep in the 1975 Tony Awards by winning in 7 out of 8 nominations including Best Choreography, Best Original Score, and Best Musical.
