Occurring largely throughout the time span concurrent with the 1832 French rebellion in Paris, France, the musical is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris who was convicted for almost two decades due to stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. Despite nearing the end of his sentence, he escapes and looks for a second chance to live his life; Jean Valjean then takes on a new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and set on apprehending and bringing Valjean to justice.

Transpiring over a duration of roughly 20 years across the show's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Jean Valjean happens to be involved through fated encounters with numerous key figures in every part of the musical – Fantine is one of his factory workers who mothers an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster baby of Jean Valjean, who is in fact Fantine’s infant; Marius, a young local fighting for the insurgency and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters shown in the play are the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who also lead a street gang and are engrossed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their child, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and comrades of the rebellion specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning orphan, and the revolt’s leader, Enjolras.

This vibrant cast of characters who are part of one struggle and their personal stories are presented beautifully on a live platform, not just with the show's 19th century French-based clothing and prop creations, but most especially with the musical being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With iconic songs such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its magnificent song list, the heart-stopping show is able to portray the emotion, passion, and tragedy hidden deep in each and every character that comes to life in the theater.
