In 1980, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the original play screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the matching name, Les Mis was modified into a musical performed as a fully sung-through show, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that era.
Following an initial showing in Paris, France, there was obviously overwhelming support to create a more accessible adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he was so inspired and agreed to create an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the translated songs. The English production of Les Mis at first performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its astounding success and larger audience with the English version, the show unsurprisingly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, London theatre's superior location, and ran for almost 20 years. The musical then transferred one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its productions since its first showing in 1980, Les Mis is actually the longest-running musical so far in this generation.
With 37 years in London's West End solely and not even listing its tours in other countries, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is incontrovertible that Les Misérables endures and is excellent in the perspective of the play's attendees. The storyline and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the evident heart beneath the surface of each character and act performed. Les Mis has become so successful that the show has been adapted to films numerous times and received very positively even on a separate medium.
This upcoming December’s run of Les Misérables has it in Illinois, where the show will be running on Tuesday 17th December 2024, in Cadillac Palace, Chicago.
