Occurring largely during the period preceding and during the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, France, Les Misérables is the tale of Jean Valjean, a local of France who was sentenced for almost two decades because of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and looks for a new life free from the law; he then adopts a different persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and intent on capturing and bringing the ex-convict to justice.

Transpiring over a span of almost 20 years covered by its two acts, Jean Valjean becomes entangled through fated encounters with a few key characters in every part of the show – Fantine is one of his factory workers who gives birth to an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster child of Monsieur Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a young local on the side of the revolt and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters seen in Les Misérables include the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who also lead a street gang and are consumed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and comrades of the insurgency including Gavroche, a naive but talented child, and the opposition’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.

This motley group of characters entangled by serendipity and their personal hardships are brought to life on stage, not just with the musical's 19th century French-inspired outfit and prop creations, but principally with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from start to finish. With famous numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as anthems of its amazing song list, Les Mis is able to communicate the underlying motives beneath each and every character that unveils the magic of Les Mis on stage.
