Once upon a time (1957, to be exact), a storyteller (Dr. Seuss, you might have heard of him) wrote a book for charming little children. The book was a roaring success that ingrained itself into American yuletide traditions, no biggie. Then came the TV specials, the movies, the stage plays. Eventually, we find ourselves here. On the Broadway stage. A grand symphony of jolly good music and strikingly handsome visuals. For multiple years, Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical shattered box office records, drawing in millions of Americans across the country. It also earned critical acclaim from publication giant The New York Times, with an excited “[It’s] 100 times better than any bedtime story.”
“AN EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE! 100 times better than any bedtime story.” – The New York Times
“BRILLIANT! A Grinch for the ages at the Pantages.” – The Hollywood Reporter
How about a sneak preview of our lovely (non) hero? Here’s a statement from a previous “interview” with “The Mean One” himself:
“I imagine rolling a tiny snowball down Mount Crumpit, and watch it gather mass as it nears Whoville. Then finally I’ll believe in Christmas miracles, as that ball crushes the town and all its holiday spirit.”
He’s apparently also a fan of Rocky movies.
Isolated from the merry population of Whoville, cantankerous Mr. Grinch hatches a most mischievous plan. What, you may ask? Why, he’s going to rob those poor fools blind of their beloved Christmas, of course! Huh? How would he go about that? Alright, alright, I guess I could share this secret with you. Disguised as Santa Claus (and with the help of his dog Max), our cabbage-colored recluse plans to take away all the Christmassy things from Whoville. Decorations. Stockings. Presents! Oh, my! Tune in to the Broadway classic to see The Grinch’s daring escapades and see how the good folks of Whoville will fare. Who will rise to the challenge? The bright-eyed and bubbly Cindy Lou Who? Papa Who or Mama Who or Grandpa Who or Grandma Who? Max the Dog? Wait, no, he’s our narrator. In any case! Find out how the spirit of Christmas danced its way into a heart that was supposedly “two sizes too small”.
Celebrating its 25th year on stage, this gripping tale, as told by The Grinch’s canine companion Max, is adorned throughout with marvelous set pieces. Feast your eyes on book-accurate costumes and performances that will have you grinning in absolute joy. Anticipate an otherworldly experience from a Broadway production based on John DeLuca’s original choreography and 3-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien’s flawless direction. And don’t forget Mel Marvin’s masterful compositions, paired with Timothy Mason’s lyrics, that will urge you to get up and start dancing with the stars on stage! All these and more, wrapped up nicely in an 85-minute show to start (or end) your day on a high note.
Looking to get a little nostalgic? If so, then you’re in for quite a delight! The theatrical event headlines memorable songs from the animated special, notably “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas”.
