The Lion King at Cadillac Palace Theatre

The tale of Disney’s The Lion King starts in a fictional region of the African savanna; based in The Pride Lands, the young heir Simba is fated to take over after his father, before disloyalty is revealed because of the work of his jealous uncle Scar and his intention to take the throne and become King himself. The first half's sequence of incidents leads to Simba's exile from his home and the account of his consequent journey back to retake his throne and his place as King.

The Lion King, since its creation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African culture and historical basis given its context. The plot itself is actually taken from previously existing African warriors and factual events – Simba as an example is the animal equivalent of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was justly referred to The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to earn a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, paid due homage to the original film as source material, particularly outfits used, which resulted in an accurate Broadway production of the show. The outfits alone are respectful depictions of several traditional tribes in Africa, an example of such is Simba’s costume in the show which is actually copied from Kenyan Maasi soldiers' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the remarkable musical score created by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African roots, with the live adaptation even adding numbers with lyrics that are performed either partially or fully in African dialects including Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African inspiration is also noticeable in dance numbers, with several of the dances consistently featuring the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.

The costume design, music, and stellar performances all work in harmony to carry out an awe-inspiring musical.
