The 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, Moulin Rouge gained nominations at the 74th Academy Awards, grossing nearly $180 million worldwide. This beloved musical film about passion and misfortune stayed in our hearts and is now a hit Broadway show performed around the globe. The Broadway show had a long and rocky start since there were merely whispers of a Broadway adaptation in 2002 and 2006. But in 2016, it was formally announced that this glitzy film would join Broadway.
