A story of difficult love between an unlikely pair, Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells us a classical tale of romance in the equally romantic location of Paris, France. In the districts of Montmartre, Christian, a traveling composer who journeys in Paris, France with the goal of achieving his dreams, encounters the would-be love of his life and club entertainer, Satine, in the renowned nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another wealthy benefactor sets his eyes on Satine as his muse.
Paying tribute to Baz Luhrmann's original that was staged more than a decade after the late film, this musical's early challenge was to take this known narrative and giving it a modern touch. The best move of the production, just like the 2001 film, was to present the secret romantic affair with alternate and fresh renditions of this generation's pop numbers. The next move was to expand the musical numbers and truly turn the musical into a “a modern retelling of Moulin Rouge”, as the production team call it. The result, as watched on the actual stage, was an enormous collection of magnificent medleys, mash-ups, and numbers. Though the show retains some of the 2001 picture's chart-topping numbers including Lady Marmalade, the hit musical now has pop hits from more recent years including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic performed in unique arrangements.
