Set in the Bohemian period during the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The play is set in and is all about the dealings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge became renowned for its French Cabaret style – lively, loose, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian entertainment venue that the staging was based on also impacted the creative team, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's creative team saying that they did take pieces of the actual Bohemian time period, and it can undoubtedly be witnessed in the production. The decor, clothing, musical arrangements, and song and dance numbers (which features a lot of can-can dance) all obviously pay homage to to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and during the peak of France's La Belle Époque, a period thought to be the height of high artistic and cultural development, where the romantic tale of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who travels to France searching for a successful career, meets Satine, the favorite entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite both external and internal challenges, fall deeply in love and settle for a hidden affair with each other because of the Duke of Monroth's intervention.

Contrary to other accounts, the period of La Belle Époque was criticized by many not as a period of peace and harmony. Some people are of the opinion that this decade were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. the Broadway play, however, chose to capture the era in a more endearing perspective by focusing on the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as perceived through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.

In more recent years, viewers and audiences have the opening to enjoy the show most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally colorful and epic venue, Cadillac Palace. With interior decor just as dazzling as the set design that it is staging, Cadillac Palace is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Wednesday 2nd April 2025.
