More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel created the original stage script for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was modified and turned into a theater play as a fully lyricized play, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that time period.

Following a very short run in Paris, France, there was evidently a growing demand to produce a more accessible show, and once Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he was so inspired and announced he was going to produce an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the English lyrics. The English staging of the musical only premiered with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, the show unsurprisingly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and superior theater, and ran for almost 20 years. The musical then relocated once again to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its tours since its creation all those years ago, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running stage play of all time.

With almost 40 years in London solely and not even counting its tours in international cities, including its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is incontrovertible that this global hit endures and is awesome in the perspective of the play's attendees. The plot and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the revealed passion behind each song and act presented. The musical has become so successful that the play has been adapted to films numerous times and received very positively even on a different platform.

This coming December’s season of Les Mis carries it to Illinois, where the show will be performed on Tuesday 31st December 2024, in Cadillac Palace, Chicago.
