More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the initial musical script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s late book of the same name, Les Misérables was transformed into a musical as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that time period.
Following a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was already great clamor to produce an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he fully committed and announced he was going to write an English version while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the translated song numbers. The English staging of the musical at first performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but due to its impressive success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it rapidly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and premier venue, and was performed for almost 20 years. Les Mis then transferred once again to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its tours since its first showing all those years ago, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running musical so far in this generation.
With almost 40 years in London solely and not even listing its shows in foreign locations, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that Les Mis continues to be impressive in the perspective of the musical’s attendees. The storyline and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality due to the revealed emotion behind the mask of each character and act presented. The musical has become so successful that it has been converted to motion pictures repeatedly and gained loyal fanbases even on a separate platform.
