In 1980, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the initial play script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel of the identical name, the plot of Les Mis was adapted and turned into a musical performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that time period.
Following an initial showing in Paris, France, there was obviously overwhelming support to create an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the soundtrack, he was so inspired and announced he was going to produce an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new song numbers. The English staging of the musical initially performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the musical rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, London theatre's superior theater, and was performed for close to two decades. Les Mis then transferred once again to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. If you include all its productions since its first showing all those years ago, Les Mis is statistically the longest-running musical in the entire world.
With 37 years in London on its own and not even enumerating its tours in international locations, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that Les Mis endures and is awe-inspiring in the perspective of the musical’s audiences. The narrative and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality because of the revealed heart behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Mis has become so successful that it has been turned into motion pictures repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on a separate medium.
This approaching January’s run of Les Mis carries it to Illinois, where the show will be hosted on Sunday 5th January 2025, in Cadillac Palace, Chicago.
