Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the very first play screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s late book of the identical title, Les Misérables was adapted into a live stage adaptation as a fully lyricized play, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that era.
Following a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was obviously a growing demand to produce an English adaptation, and once Cameron Macikintosh discovered the musical score, he fully committed and decided to write an English adaptation in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new songs. The English staging of the musical initially debuted with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its financial success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a more bustling and superior venue, and was performed for 19 years. The West End play then transferred once again to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its runs since its inception all those years ago, Les Mis is actually the longest-running musical so far in this generation.
With 37 years in London on its own and not even listing its productions in international cities, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is incontrovertible that this global hit perseveres and is breathtaking in the viewpoint of the show's attendees. The narrative and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, elevates the musical's quality because of the revealed heart behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Misérables has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been turned into motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on a different platform.
