Amidst a tumultuous time and widespread rebellion in the historic 19th century French Revolution, a sentenced lawbreaker by the name of Jean Valjean severs his parole after almost two decades incarcerated. Because of quick thinking and a bit of luck, Jean Valjean is free to make his next move and creates a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, eventually rising to become a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously lucky in concealing his identity from his nemesis Javert, he is unfortunately pulled in the uprising of the commoners of Paris, France, wherein Jean Valjean is forced to find solutions that would affect both himself and his adopted daughter, Cosette.

This story from Victor Hugo's novel, filled with sacrifice and passion, has been produced successfully for several decades in a number of theaters over many different countries. Since its first showing in its home of Paris in the late 1900s, it has secured its place not just as one of the most unsurpassed musicals of this generation, but also part of the most-awarded musicals too. In its global debut on its own, it topped the nominations and awards of the Tony Awards, with 12 nominations and 8 wins. The musical won as Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Musical. Thereupon, the musical’s local and international tours went on to gain awards and nominations in its subsequent revivals in Broadway, Toronto, and Australian revivals comprising of the Helpmann Awards, Dora Awards, Green Room Awards, and as expected, Tony Awards once again.
