Occurring largely during the period concurrent with the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, the musical is the story of Jean Valjean, a resident of Paris, France who was convicted for almost two decades as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he breaks free and seeks a second chance to live his life; he then adopts a brand new persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and set on apprehending and bringing the ex-convict face the consequences of his previous escape.
Taking place over a duration of roughly two decades consisting of the show's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Jean Valjean happens to be intertwined in one way or another with a few main characters in every part of Les Mis – Fantine is one of his factory employees who mothers an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster daughter of Jean Valjean, who turns out to be Fantine’s baby; Marius, a student fighting for the revolt and the love interest of Cosette. Other characters featured in the play include the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who pay no heed to their daughter and are engrossed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their daughter, who hides her true feelings for Marius; and supporters of the rebellion namely Gavroche, a naive but resourceful orphan, and the opposition’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This vibrant ensemble of characters entangled by serendipity and their individual hardships are brought to life on stage, not just with its 19th century French-inspired outfit and set design, but principally with the musical being sung-through fully from start to finish. With famous numbers including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing song list, the musical is able to reveal the real and unmasked personalities hiding behind every character that unveils the magic of Les Mis in the theater.
