Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Cadillac Palace Theatre

Set in the Bohemian period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The musical takes places and is all about the events of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the turn of the 20th century, the nightclub became well-known for its French Cabaret cultural aspect – ecstatic, full of spirit, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the show was created from also influenced the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creative team saying that they did take parts of the actual Bohemian time period, and it can undoubtedly be viewed in the performance. The set design, costumes, musical arrangements, and choreography (which sees a lot of can-can dance) all obviously show reverence and respect to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a period pointed to as the peak of beauty and spreading artistry, where the romantic affair of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who moves to Paris searching for a successful career, meets Satine, the greatest entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The pair, despite both external and internal challenges, fall crazily in love and have to be a concealed affair with each other because of the Duke of Monroth's intervention.

Ironically, the period of La Belle Époque was criticized by many not as a time of advancement or development. Some people believe that this time period were all about rising tension beneath the surface. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to showcase the time period in a more endearing perspective by highlighting the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the play.

In this decade, locals and tourists have the chance to be part of the passion most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally lively and second to none venue, Cadillac Palace.
