Amidst a tumultuous time and widespread rebellion in the 1800s in Paris, a convicted thief going by the name of Jean Valjean escapes his parole after a significant period of time on the chain gang. Due to quick thinking and a bit of luck, he is able to fully escape the law and creates a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, in due time rising to become a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously successful in concealing his identity from his nemesis Javert, Valjean is inevitably involved in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, wherein he is compelled to find answers that would affect both himself and his adopted daughter, Cosette.
This narrative from Victor Hugo's novel, one of sacrifice and passion, has been going on for several decades in multiple theaters all over the world. Since its first showing on the live stage in the late 20th century, it has deservingly been referred to not only as one of the most amazing musicals of the past 4 decades, but also part of the shows with the most awards too. In 1987 alone, it swept the awards season of the Tony Awards, with 12 nominations in total and 8 wins. The musical secured awards as Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical. Later on, the box office hit went on to garner awards and commendations in its next performances in Australian, Toronto, and Broadway tours including from the Helpmann Awards, Dora Awards, Green Room Awards, and of course, Tony Awards once again.
