When compared to the former storyline of the Shakespearean play which was presented on stage roughly four centuries ago, critics have discerned the considerable modifications that had been applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original premise centers around the tragic tale that transpires because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the boundless possibilities of life, even after such harrowing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her team of friends, who journey to Paris to embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes hold of her husband’s tale and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while introducing new and equally confident women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the show. Even the fashion worn by the production’s leading cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan clothing and iconography with today’s dress styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
